Sign, Sealed, Delivered

March 30, 2012 by Jessica Fine

The song that I used as the title of this blog post is a song written and sung by Stevie Wonder.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

Like a fool I went and stayed too long
Now I’m wondering if your love’s still strong
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I’m yours!

Then that time I went and said goodbye
Now I’m back and not ashamed to cry
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I’m yours!

Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m yours
(You got my future in your hands)

I’ve done a lot of foolish things
That I really didn’t mean, didn’t I?

Seen a lot of things in this old world
When I touch them, they mean nothing, girl
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I’m yours!

Oowee baby, you set my soul on fire
That’s why I know you’re my heart’s only desire

Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m yours
(You got my future in your hands)

The reason why I picked this song is because we received our Ketubah in the mail yesterday. That is the delivered part of the title. The signed part of the title will be done at the Bedecken part of our wedding ceremony. The Ketubah will be signed by Adam and myself, the Rabbi, the Cantor, and my two witnesses who are Brett Corbat and Michael Baruch. Finally, the sealed part of title will be done when the wedding is all over and my Cousin who owns a framing store in Sharon, Massachusetts will be framing the Ketubah for Adam and I to display in our home. The act of framing the Ketubah seals the deal that we are married, get it? I am so excited and cannot wait for everyone to see our beautiful Ketubah.

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend

February 27, 2012 by Jessica Fine

This song explains that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. This song is sung by Marilyn Monroe.

The song lyrics are:

The French are glad to die for love;
They delight in fighting duels.
But I prefer a man who lives
And give expensive jewels.

A kiss on the hand may be quite continental,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
A kiss may be grand, but it won’t pay the rental
On your humble flat
Or help you at the automat.
Men grow cold as girls grow old,
And we all lose our charm in the end.
But square cut or pear shape
These rocks don’t lose their shape!
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

I’ve heard of affairs that are strictly platonic,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
And I think affairs that you must keep Masonic
Are the better bets
If little pets get big baguettes.
Time rolls on, and youth is gone,
And you can’t straighten up when you bend.
But stiff back or stiff knees,
You stand straight at Tiffany’s!
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

There may come a time when a lass needs a lawyer,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
There may come a time when a hard-boiled employer
Thinks you’re awful nice,
But get that ice or else no dice.
He’s your guy when stocks are high,
But beware when they start to descend,
It’s then that those louses
Go back to their spouses!
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

A well conducted rendezvous
Makes a maiden’s heart beat quicker.
But when the rendezvous is through,
These stones still keep their flicker.

Romance is divine, and I’m not one to knock it,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
Romance is divine, yes, but where can you hock it?
When the flame is gone,
Just try and pawn a tired Don Juan.
Some men buy, and some just sigh
That to make you their bride they intend.
But buyers or sighers
They’re such goddamn liars!
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

At Yale there’s a lad whose appeal I acknowledge,
But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
I might like his dad, but when I meet a college boy,
The thing to say
Is ‘ray, ‘ray, ‘ray for Cartier!
Some girls find some piece of mind
In a trust fund that banks recommend.
But if you are busty
Your trustee gets lusty!
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

Stash those rocks in your strongbox
For on them you can always depend.
It’s not compensation,
It’s self-preservation!
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
(I don’t mean rhinestones!)
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

This past weekend, I bought a Nadri bracelet that matches the Nadri earrings, and the Nadri necklace for my wedding day at Lord and Taylor. It is gorgeous. All of the pieces of jewelry perfectly match. I cannot wait to wear all of these pieces of jewelry on my wedding day. I am so excited. The day is approaching so quickly. It will be here before we know it.

Extra, extra!

Today our engagement announcement was featured in the Eagle-Tribune, the major newspaper for the Merrimack Valley region of Massachusetts.  Our announcement can be seen here. As soon as we have a copy I will scan in a version and post it here.

The Five W’s and the H

January 23, 2012 by Jessica Fine

Adam and I have been working on the wording of our wedding invitations. We have been writing rough draft after rough draft of ideas on what we exactly want the wedding initiation to say. We also wanted to make sure we added in the right amount of Hebrew in to the invitation. We will be finalizing our wedding invitations sometime in April.

Besides creating the wedding invitation, we need to create a response card, and enclosure card to enclose within the invitation.
Within the invitation and enclosing cards we will include:

Who: The parents of the bride and the parents of the groom are, and who are the bride and groom

What: What events will be taking place: kabbalat panim, chuppah, cocktail hour, and reception

When: Sunday, August 19, 2012

Where: Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston, in Cambridge, MA.

Why: Jessica Lynne Fine and Adam Glassman Sowalsky are getting married

How: How should guests RSVP to this occasion and we will be giving directions on how to get to the hotel

We can’t wait for everyone to see the invitations.

And even more news

On the heels of my previous post comes the announcement that today we are the “HEADLINE” of the Brookline Tab & Bulletin website.  Our engagement announcement was printed in their local paper, as well, and our announcement is currently the leading story on the webpage.  To immortalize this moment, I created a screenshot.

Surely, there are bigger stories.  Then again, maybe not.

All the News that’s Fit to Reproduce

January 22, 2012 by Adam Sowalsky

This past Thursday, coinciding quite nicely with the 7-month-to-go mark for our wedding and having been engaged for a little over 9 months, our first engagement announcement appeared in the Andover Towsnman, the weekly paper of Andover, which is where Jessica’s parents live and Jessica grew up. Our announcement uses one of our favorite pictures from the photography taken of us in the Boston Public Garden. Click here to see the article.

Housekeeping and Honeymooning

January 16, 2012 by Adam Sowalsky

This past week Jessica and I decided on (and put a deposit down towards) our Honeymoon!  We have decided on a 12-night cruise of the Mediterranean.  For details, please check out our Honeymoon page, which can be found under the reorganized section called “Fun Stuff.”

In honor of the occasion, we have created a new piece of interactive content exclusively available (at the moment) to those who scan the QR code on our save-the-date magnet.  So go find it (it’s probably buried under other magnets on your refrigerator at this point) and give it a scan.  Enjoy!

So as not to short-change those of you who do not have smart phones capable of scanning a QR code, we have created a new page (also under “Fun Stuff”) of the older interactive QR-code content previously unavailable to you.  We hope you enjoy that as well!

I Feel Pretty

December 14, 2011 by Jessica Fine

No, I am not going to burst out singing the song from West Side Story. I do have exciting news to share with all of you though; I got the hair stylist and the makeup stylist both are coming from Philip Ciampa Salon in Andover, Massachusetts for the wedding. My whole family has been going to this salon for many years.

The name of the hair stylist is Jamie and the name of the makeup stylist is Donna. They both will be traveling together from the salon to the hotel the morning of the wedding to do the whole bridal party, my moms, Adam’s moms, and my makeup.

I will be meeting both of the women at the salon for my hair style trial and make up trial in the spring time.

I cannot wait for all of us to get beautified!

This is a Jewish wedding, after all, Part II

December 9, 2011 by Adam Sowalsky

Today we revisit a topic last discussed almost 6 months ago, the Bencher.

While yesterday’s visit with Andrew was a piece of cake, we talked briefly about the Bencher. Quite appropriately, as well, since Jessica and I have been discussing this among ourselves lately too.  The Bencher is a small book, about the size of your palm, that can contain songs and blessings. These are commonly found at Jewish simcha‘s, personalized for the occasion, for use at the event and for guests to take home and use.

For us, the Bencher holds three purposes.

1) We want it to have the Sheva Brachot, the 7 blessings sung to a newly-wed bride and groom, for use at the reception following our wedding.  Almost all Benchers satisfy this requirement.

2) Because Jessica and I both went to Jewish camps where we learned tunes to the Birkat HaMazon (grace after meals) we want a Bencher that uses the traditional text of the blessings.  So many of the ones we have evaluated tried to “modernize” the text with the unfortunate effect of disturbing the flow of the traditional prayers we know so well.

3) When Jessica and I have our own home as husband and wife, we anticipate Shabbat and Holiday dinners where we can pull out a stack of these Benchers for before and after the meal.  A souvenir of our wedding, the joy of the day will linger every time we use the Bencher.

Andrew, who has seen his fair share of Jewish celebrations and has more Benchers than he knows what to do with, brought up an interesting point: when in the evening are we going to actually use our carefully-selected and personalized Bencher?  At so many weddings he has attended they sit untouched on the tables and guests leave without even taking one (or even know they were for them to take!).  When not forgotten, at some weddings, Birkat HaMazon and Sheva Brachot are sung at the end of the evening when many guests may have already left.  I wonder if we can include this important Jewish tradition (which is the last Jewish tradition we would include for the evening) after dessert when the band takes it break, rather than waiting until the very end of the night.

After all, we are not making our decision of Bencher lightly.  We had previously thought about using the new Bencher L’Chu N’Ran’nah (Let Us Sing) but after carefully reading through the Birkat HaMazon the text had significant “modernization” deviations that were too distracting.  Since we want any Bencher used at our wedding to be one we would enjoy using in our new home, we are now focused on the Second Edition of B’Kol Echad, a revised edition of the “little blue Bencher” by USY. We went to Kolbo last Sunday and purchased a sample copy for us to review.  We found that the text of the new B’Kol Echad very closely follows what Jessica and I are so familiar with and it is comprehensive enough to use throughout the year. It will be perfect.

While the new edition of B’Kol Echad may not be compatible (page-wise) with the 1st Edition and may not have the beautiful layout found in L’Chu N’Ran’nah, I think it will be perfect for us, because it will be “our” Bencher.

Now I’d like to harness the power of this blog. Visitors, guests, and everyone: what do you think? What did you consider important when you decided on Benchers?  What Bencher did you want, and what did you end up using?  And more importantly, what’s the right number to order?
