The Short List

As Jessica said, now that the date is set we can begin to focus on finding our vendors, that is, the other aspects of the wedding that play other important roles.  For the past couple weeks, Jessica and I have been assembling a list of photographers and bands that we would like to have at our wedding, and we’ve narrowed them down to assemble our “Short List” – the ones we are contacting and meeting.

For photography, Jessica and I are very interested in a “journalistic” style – pictures that tell a story.  Also important to me is the way the picture balances light and color with the appearance of the subjects, whether they be people dancing, the room set up for the party, or a family portrait. We want our pictures to come to life, so that very little of the photographic records looks posed rather than animated.

First on our “Short List” is Nancy Gould, with whom we will be meeting in a couple weeks.  We’ll let you know how that turns out.

For a band, my personal requirement is that the band be able to play excellent Simcha music – you know, the Hora, Hava Nagila, and a medley of other tunes with a Klezmer feel that is authentically Jewish.  To get that feel, I believe that the band either needs to specialize in Klezmer or be fundamentally a Jewish band.  Balancing that, Jessica has one requirement that I know of – that the band be able to play good country music.  Jess and I (and her parents too) all agree that the band needs to be able to play excellent contemporary music, as that will be the majority of the dinner/after-dinner music (dancing).  Quite a lot to balance.

First on our “Short List” is The Winiker Band, who we will be seeing in concert in a couple weeks.  Just like the photographer, we’ll let you know how that turns out.
